Forecast service changes for Victoria

The Bureau of Meteorology upgraded its operational forecast system in the Victorian Regional Forecast Centre on October 28th 2008. Some of the changes Victorians will notice on the Victorian weather page include:

Daily Weather Forecasts

• 7 day descriptive forecasts available for 29 locations across Victoria. view map of locations
• 7 day concise forecasts for 80 locations.view map of locations
• Wind speeds described in kilometres per hour.
• Terms such as 'mild' and 'warm' replaced with temperature ranges.
• Maximum and minimum temperatures will be replaced with daytime maximum temperatures for the period 6am to 9pm, and overnight minimum temperatures for the period 6pm to 9am.

Marine Services

• Victoria will now have four coastal waters zones, with the East Coast split into the East Gippsland and Central Gippsland zones.
• Marine wind warnings will highlight the most extreme conditions expected in each coastal or local waters area for the following 24 hour period.
• Separate forecast and warning services will be provided for local waters such as Port Phillip, Western Port and the Gippsland Lakes.

• There will be 7 day forecasts for more rural locations.
• Improved information about the timing and duration of adverse weather conditions.

The Bureau of Meteorology will provide summary forecasts for 80 locations across Victoria.
