MONTHLY CLIMATE SUMMARY - ACT METEOROLOGICAL OFFICE
November in the ACT much warmer and drier than normal
November was much warmer and drier than normal in the Australian Capital Territory
this year. Evaporation was also well above average.
Temperature: The average daily maximum temperature at Canberra Airport in November
was 27.5 degrees Celsius, the second highest since temperature records began
in 1939. The highest was 28.7 degrees in 1982. The long-term average for November is
22.4 degrees. There were 11 days with maximums above 30 degrees compared with the
average of two. The average minimum temperature was 11.1 degrees, the fourth highest on
record and well above the long-term mean of 8.6. Overall, the mean daily temperature
of 19.3 degrees was the second highest on record. The record is 19.35 degrees in
November 1982. The long-term average is 15.5 degrees.
Rainfall: The total November rainfall at Canberra airport was 10.4 millimetres
over three days, well below the average of 64.5mm over 10 days. It was the third lowest
November total on record. Lower November totals were 0.2mm in 1982 and 4.4mm in 1977.
Rainfall was generally low across the ACT. The highest reading was 20.8mm at Tharwa,
while the lowest was 3.0mm at Mawson.
Other: Total evaporation for the month was 259.0mm, well above the average of
191.6mm and the third highest since evaporation records started in 1967. The mean daily
wind run at 2 metres was 213.4 kilometres a day, slightly above the average of 204.6.
Sunshine averaged 9.4 hours a day, again slightly above the average of 8.9. Average daily
pressure was 1016.7 hectopascals, well above the average of 1013.1.
