MONTHLY CLIMATE SUMMARY - ACT METEOROLOGICAL OFFICE

November was wet and warm in the ACT

Rainfall and maximum temperatures were above average in the ACT in November this year, while minimum temperatures were very close to average.

Rainfall: Canberra Airport recorded 73.4 millimetres of rain over seven days in November, just above the average of 63.3 mm over 10 days. Most rain fell over the three-day period 21-23 November. A thunderstorm on the afternoon of the 21st produced very heavy rainfall. There was one unofficial report of more than 40 mm of rain in two hours in the northern suburbs of Canberra, indicating that a severe thunderstorm was likely to have occurred in that area. Most places in the ACT received average or above average rainfall. The highest total was 102.7 mm at the Botanic Gardens, while the lowest was 66.0 mm at Tuggeranong. There were two thunderstorm days for the month (average four) with hail recorded at the airport on two occasions (average one).

Temperature: The mean daily maximum temperature of 23.8 degrees Celsius was above the long-term average of 22.5 degrees. The mean daily minimum temperature of 8.5 degrees was very close to the long-term average of 8.6 degrees. There were three frosts in November (average two), and three days when the maximum temperature exceeded 30.0 degrees (average two). While the overall average maximum temperature was above average, there were several periods of quite cool conditions, particularly on 1-3 November and 22-24 November when the maximum temperatures were only 15-19 degrees. Overall, the mean daily temperature for November was 16.2 degrees, just above the long-term value of 15.6 degrees.

Other: The mean daily sunshine in November was 9.5 hours a day, well above the average of 8.9 hr/day. The monthly evaporation of 191.0 mm was very close to the average of 193.6 mm. It was not as windy as normal in November, with a mean daily wind run of 195 kilometres a day compared with the long-term average of 205 km/day. There were two days when strong winds were recorded (average three). There were no fogs for the month (average one), while the mean daily pressure of 1017.3 hectopascals was well above the average of 1013.1 hPa.
