MEDIA RELEASE - NSW REGIONAL OFFICE

Sydney cools down after a hot, dry and smoky start to January

The first week of the year in Sydney was characterised by hot, dry conditions. Thick smoke haze from bushfires reduced visibility to 5 kilometres at times. For the month as a whole, the average relative humidity at 3pm was 56 per cent, the third lowest on record. The lowest on record is 54 per cent in 1985. The long-term average is 63 per cent. The reading of 5 per cent relative humidity on the 1st was one of the lowest recorded in Sydney.

Sydney's rainfall in January was close to average this year, with 98 millimetres recorded at Observatory Hill. The highest suburban fall was 106mm at Merrylands. Rain and thunderstorms on the 7th eased the critical bushfire situation after houses and many hectares of bushland around Sydney were destroyed. There were thunderstorms on three days in January, with the heaviest rainfall 35mm at Homebush on the 15th.

Both average maximum and minimum temperatures were well above the long-term averages in January. The highest temperature in Sydney was 37 degrees Celsius on the 1st. There was plentiful sunshine, with the exception of a few cloudy days toward the end of the month. The average sunshine of 8.7 hours a day was the sunniest recording for Sydney since 1994.
