MONTHLY CLIMATE SUMMARY - NSW REGIONAL OFFICE

Significant Areas of NSW Receive Lowest on Record Rainfall in October

October Rainfall: Rainfall for this month in NSW has once again been very low. NSW has experienced a particularly severe monthly deficit during the 7 month period of drought from April to October. This month NSW has an extensive area of lowest on record covering many parts of the western inland districts and the southern slopes and plains. Only a few areas have had anything close to average falls this month. There was a solitary event on the 28th of the month in parts of the Northwest Slopes and Plains, Northern Tablelands and the Northern Rivers. Moree Airport Station (Northwest Plains) received 42.8 mm on the 28th .   See Map 1

August to October 2002 Rainfall: Rainfall over the last three months has been very low. For the three month period from August to October there are significant areas of lowest on record rainfalls in parts of the Central Tablelands and in the far west. Almost completely the whole state is below average. See Map 2

October Temperatures: The monthly mean maximum temperature for the State has been generally above average. Parts of the Central Tablelands and Hunter districts are the greatest affected areas where maximum temperatures are above average by more than 5°C See Map 3. Mean monthly minimum temperatures are generally below average by around 1°C although some parts of the southern Lower Western District are below average by more than 2°C. See Map 4

A note about deciles: Deciles are used to give an element (in this case rainfall) a ranking. Deciles are calculated by arranging the totals in ascending order (from lowest to highest) then splitting them into 10 equal groups (thus the groups are called deciles). The first group would be in decile range one, the second group in decile range two, etc up to the highest annual totals (highest 10 per cent) being in decile range 10.
