Humid, cloudy and rainy in Sydney during April

 
Rainfall:  Above average rainfall was recorded in Sydney during April with a total of 192.2mm, compared to the long term average of 127mm. Rain was recorded on 18 days, well above the average of 12 days.  While most coastal suburbs recorded heavy rain during the month western suburbs recorded well below average rainfall, with totals ranging from 267mm at Cronulla to only 38mm at Richmond. On the 27th, very heavy rain from a thunderstorm at Homebush produced 96mm in 3 hours which is a 1 in 20 year event.

Temperatures and other phenomena:   Both average maximum and minimum temperatures were below the long term average during April, due mainly to cloudy skies and prevailing SE winds. Temperatures ranged from 27 deg on the 15th to 11.7 deg on the 5th. Sunshine averaged 5.7 hours per day, well below average and the lowest for April since 1990 when 4.6 hours per day. The relative humidity was the highest for April since 1990, averaging 78% at 9am. One thunderstorm was recorded during the month and mist on the morning of the 28th reduced visibility to 8 km.
