Sydney Climate Summary - NSW Regional OfficeSydney's spring 4th warmest on recordSpring 2004 (September to November)Temperatures: The average spring temperature of 18.9 deg (daytime and night-time temperatures) was the 4th highest on record for Sydney. The warmest spring was 2 years ago with an average temperature of 19.5 deg. There were 4 days when daytime temperatures exceeded 35 deg, the highest number since 1944 when there was 6 days. The historic average is only one day. The highest temperature reached 39 deg on 28 November while the coldest night was 7 deg on 13 September. Sydney metropolitan temperatures ranged from a daytime high of 42 deg at Penrith on 30 November to a night-time low of - 0.4 deg at Badgerys Creek on 13 September. Rainfall: Sydney's spring rainfall of 361mm was above the historic average of 229mm and was the wettest spring since 1995 when 453mm was recorded. Sydney's wet October (234mm) was the main contributor to the above average spring rainfall. There were 33 rain days during spring, which is average. Suburban rainfall totals for spring decreased away from the coast and ranged from a high of 444mm at Turramurra to a low of 279mm at Badgerys Creek. November 2004 Temperatures: During November temperatures were again above the historic average making it the 12th consecutive month with above average temperatures in Sydney. The monthly average maximum temperature of 25.4 deg was nearly 2 deg above the historic average for November and the 9th highest on record (records since 1859). Hot days were fairly frequent during the second half of month with 5 days above 30 deg, the highest number since 1966 when there was 7 days. Sydney's highest daily maximum temperature was 38.9 deg on the 28th, the highest November temperature since 1988 when 39.2 was recorded. The lowest overnight minimum was a mild 13 deg on the 4th and 23rd. Sydney metropolitan temperatures ranged from 42 deg at Penrith on the 30th to a low of 7 deg at Camden on the 4th. Rainfall: The monthly rainfall total of 67mm was slightly below the historic November average of 83mm. The generally light showers fell over 14 rain days which is above the historic average of 11 days. However, one heavy shower on the 11th during a thunderstorm dumped more than 27mm in 3 hours. Another thunderstorm on the 2nd caused locally severe wind damage in some northern suburbs. Suburban rainfall totals for November ranged from 90mm at Turramurra to 41mm at Sans Souci (see map). On the 18th a dense sea fog was observed off Sydney's coastline. Further information:
