Heavy rain and possible flooding developing over Northeast NSW over the Long Weekend

Residents and visitors in northeast NSW are being advised to keep an eye on forecasts and warnings over the weekend with the strong likelihood of heavy rain developing during the weekend.

The Bureau of Meteorology's Regional Director in NSW, Barry Hanstrum said heavy rain will begin to develop about the Northwest Slopes and Plains, Northern Tablelands, Northern Rivers and Mid North Coast during Sunday and into Monday, as a low pressure system develops off the NSW North Coast.

We may see some flooding over parts of Northeast NSW, and have issued a Flood Watch to alert people about the potential for flooding from Monday.

Mr Hanstrum said: "Those making plans for the long weekend should keep checking forecasts and warnings to ensure they have the very latest information.

"Our main concern is the potential for moderate to major flooding in the coastal river valleys from the Queensland border to Taree and in the Macintyre Valley, although, at this stage, it’s too early to pin down exactly where the heaviest rainfall will be," he added.

The NSW State Emergency Service has advised that ‘motorists and travellers over the long weekend period should regularly check the weather forecast and listen for radio updates when travelling in the affected areas, or consider postponing unnecessary trips.

The NSW SES also advise if you are planning on camping over the long weekend, be mindful of where you set up your camp, ensuring you are not near river or stream banks or in dried-up creek beds.

Looking further ahead Mr Hanstrum said the areas of heavy rain may move further south towards the Hunter region during next week and the Bureau will keep the community updated with the latest information.
