MONTHLY CLIMATE SUMMARY - NORTHERN TERRITORY
Widespread rainfall over central and southern parts of the Territory during the second and third weeks of the month brought some relief to these areas, parts of which had their driest 12 months on record. Meanwhile, northern regions experienced warmer than average conditions for June.
A northwest cloudband that formed in the second week of the month and then again in the third week was responsible for the rainfalls, with totals approaching 100mm for the month over parts of the Alice Springs district. At least six stations recorded their highest rainfall on record for June, including Ali Curung, The Garden, Jervois, Wycliffe Well, Atula and Gemtree Park. Many other stations in the Alice Springs district were also in their top ten or twenty percent of records, with the highest rainfall total of 91.8mm for the month recorded at Jervois (this was also the highest for the whole Territory).
Note though, that rainfall deficiencies still exist. For instance, Alice Springs has recorded its 13-month lowest cumulative rainfall total for this period even though it received almost as much rain this month as it has in the past 12 months.
Meanwhile, temperatures across the Territory were above average, especially overnight lows which were as much as 2oC or 3oC warmer than normal. This was in stark contrast to last month, especially in the north, where minimums were around 3oC below average. The several stations that recorded their highest daily and average monthly minimum temperatures were all located around the centre of the Territory in the Roper-McArthur and Victoria River districts.
Maximum temperatures were also above average and were up to 2oC warmer than normal for June. Yuendemu, Ali Curung and Lajamanu broke their highest daily maximum temperatures recorded for the month.
Maps displaying recent temperature and rainfall patterns can be seen on the Bureau’s web site.
