MONTHLY CLIMATE SUMMARY - NORTHERN TERRITORY, October 2005

Record rain in southern parts - Northern Territory in October 2005

Summary

Rainfall was well above average over most areas south of the Top End, mostly during the middle third of the month, with some monthly rainfall records broken. These falls significantly eased the long-term rainfall deficiencies of the region. Monthly-mean maximum and minimum temperatures were above average at every reporting site in the Territory during October, perpetuating a long hot spell, with several monthly and 12-monthly temperature records established.

Rainfall

Several rainfall records were established during October 2005, mostly over areas south of the Top End. Most rain fell during the middle third of the month and was associated with the passage of low-pressure systems across more southern parts of the continent. For the 12 months prior to June 2005, southern parts of the Territory had experienced driest on record conditions, but solid winter rain in June and July, and this follow-up rain in October, has gone a long-way to alleviating these severe rainfall deficiencies.

Temperature

Despite some days of heavy rain, persistent northwest to northeasterly winds allowed temperatures to once again be above average across the Territory. The cloudy nights amplified the night-time temperatures, with several new high-minimum temperature records established. The hot temperatures perpetuated a long-running hot spell in the Territory, with several 12-monthly temperature records also established. The site at Darwin Airport recorded its second hottest November-October period on record (32.9oC); the hottest being the year 1997/98.
