MEDIA RELEASE - QUEENSLAND REGIONAL OFFICE

February sees hot and dry end to summer in Queensland

Rainfall totals for February were well below average over much of Queensland, with many places receiving less than half the long-term average, according to Bureau of Meteorology records. Areas with the greatest shortfalls included parts of southern Queensland, as well as the northern tropics.

Some of the notable figures included Townsville which received just 8.2mm compared with an average of 293mm, Archerfield with 17mm (average 155mm) and Goondiwindi with 2.8mm (average 69mm). Both Birdsville and Bedourie in the state's southwest recorded no rainfall at all for the month.

"While such low rainfall for February isn't unprecedented, looking at the state as a whole, it's in about the driest 10% of Februarys on record", said the Bureau's Queensland Regional Director, Mr Jim Davidson.

"Rainfall totals for the summer period were more mixed. The wet season started well with average or above average rainfall over most of the state in December, but by the end of summer many areas finished close to average, with parts of the south and tropics below average" said Mr Davidson.

As well as the very dry conditions, February was also hotter than average. Daytime temperatures were particularly warm. The average maximum temperature for the month was above normal throughout the state, reaching over 3 degrees above normal in parts of the southern interior. Minimum temperatures were closer to average in most areas, and below average in the southwest.

Mr Davidson added that despite the dry end to summer, some late wet season rainfall cannot be ruled out. "Our current rainfall outlook suggests there is no strong swing in the odds towards wetter or drier conditions for autumn. While rainfall tends to decrease in Queensland by the end of autumn, it's not unusual to get good rainfall during March and early April, especially in the tropics".
