MEDIA RELEASE - QUEENSLAND REGIONAL OFFICE

Wet June brings record cold temperatures for Queensland

Queensland has had one of its wettest June's on record with unseasonal rainfall in the northern tropics leading to record totals in many places. Georgetown with 98.1 mm (average 10.5 mm, 136 years of record), Richmond with 164.3 mm (average 15.8 mm, 117 years of record), Chillagoe with 105 mm (average 18.4 mm, 106 years of record) and Townsville with 110 mm (average 21.1 mm, 67 years of record) all reported their wettest June on record.

A series of cloud bands, which brought widespread rainfall, also kept daytime temperatures well below average with record low maximum temperatures reported across much of the state.

Taking the state as whole, and based on figures since 1950, the average maximum temperature for the month was the lowest on record. A cold outbreak on the 20th and 21st of the month combined with the cloud cover to see new daily maximum temperatures for June recorded at a number of locations. These include Boulia with 9.0oC (average 23.3oC, 119 years of record), Richmond with 11.2oC (average 26.1oC, 114 years of record), Burketown with 13.4oC (average 28.0oC, 108 years of record), Mt Isa with 9.4oC (average 24.9oC, 41 years of record), and Townsville with 13.9oC (average 25.6oC, 67 years of record).

While above average rainfall was recorded in Central and Southeast Queensland during June, longer-term rainfall deficiencies remain in these areas with well below average totals for the year to date.
