30 September 2008 Media release New state-of-the-art office for weather bureau in BrisbaneThe Bureau of Meteorology has a new state-of-the-art home in Brisbane following a launch today by the Federal Member for Brisbane Arch Bevis on behalf of the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts, Peter Garrett. Opening the new premises, Mr Bevis said the updated headquarters for Brisbane would provide an increased capacity for the Bureau to monitor severe weather and floods – including tropical cyclones – with the introduction of more modern computing and communications infrastructure. “This new address at 69 Ann Street now houses the Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre, Flood Warning Centre, and the Regional Forecasting Centre which issue the forecasts and warnings people have come to rely on, as well as the Bureau’s administrative centre for Queensland, ” Mr Bevis said. “A purpose-built Media Centre has also been incorporated into the design and this is expected to provide an even greater opportunity for the Bureau to get its messages across to the wider community. ” Mr Bevis said it was easy for many of the services that the Bureau provides to the community to be taken for granted but, in a state with a volatile climate like Queensland, it was worth remembering the fantastic job that Bureau staff do to protect lives and property. “The Australian community has come to expect a high quality of weather services from the Bureau of Meteorology and with these new facilities I am sure that will continue. I congratulate them on their move into their new and technologically updated location, ” said Mr Bevis. “It is particularly fitting that during its 100th birthday year that the Bureau has equipped itself with the latest technology to face a new century of weather and climate challenges. ” Previously the Queensland Regional Office was located at 295 Ann Street, where it had been since the early 1970s.
