MEDIA RELEASE - SOUTH AUSTRALIAN REGIONAL OFFICE
New Bureau buoy off Kangaroo Island aids sea safety
Sea and swell heights from south-west of Kangaroo Island are now available on the Bureau of Meteorology website, the South Australian Regional Office announced today.
The information will be generated by a wave rider buoy installed by the Bureau about 10 kilometres off Cape Du Couedic in about 100 metres of water. It is expected to assist marine activity and contribute to greater boating safety along the South Australian coast.
The information can be viewed at www.bom.gov.au/products/IDS65031.shtml and is planned to be available via fax services soon.
The data is displayed in a table with hourly records of "significant" wave height and period, and information on the height of the largest wave to travel past the buoy. The table will also contain wave information for the past 24 hours and will be updated every three hours.
The South Australian Department for Environment and Heritage, the Department of Transport, and Jewel Fisheries Pty Ltd, Kangaroo Island, provided support for the project.
