MONTHLY CLIMATE SUMMARY - SOUTH AUSTRALIAN REGIONAL OFFICE

Drier in the south

Rainfall for July ranged from very much below average over the southeast of the State to very much above average over the northern interiors. Maximum and minimum temperatures were mostly near normal.

July rainfall

Pastoral Districts:Rainfall totals were above to very much above average across most of the Pastoral Districts for the month of July. Further south, bordering the northern agricultural areas, rainfall totals were near average.

Generally, rainfall totals were between 25 and 50mm with some totals below 25mm predominating in the North West Pastoral district and totals over 50mm in the northeast of the Far North district.

The highest rainfall total for the Pastoral districts was 61 mm at Blinman, in the Far North district.

Agricultural Districts: Average rainfall for July was recorded across the northern agricultural districts bordering the Pastoral Districts, while below to very much below average rainfall totals were recorded over most of the remainder of the Agricultural districts.

The highest total for July was 147 mm at Woodside, in the Mount Lofty Ranges district, with several centres recording rainfall totals in excess of 100 mm in the higher parts of the Mount Lofty Ranges. The Lower Southeast and the remainder of the Mount Lofty Ranges district received totals typically between 50 and 100 mm of rain, though there were many centres with totals around 30mm mark. Totals below 25mm were reported from the Riverland, Murray Mallee and the Upper South East districts. Elsewhere rainfall totals were mostly between 25 and 50mm.

July temperatures

Maximum: Mean maximum temperatures were generally within 1 degree of normal across the Pastoral districts for July. Mean maximum temperatures ranged from 16.6ºC at Nonning and Arkaroola to 20.0ºC at Oodnadatta. The highest maximum temperature was 25.7ºC recorded at Oodnadatta on the 24th, while the lowest maximum was 8.4ºC at Pukatja on the 11th.

Across the Agricultural districts mean maximum temperatures were within 1 degree of normal. Mean maximum temperatures ranged from 11.8ºC at Parawa to 18.2ºC at Nullarbor. The highest maximum temperature was 26.0ºC at Nullarbor on the 28th while the lowest maximum was just 7.5ºC at Clare and Kuitpo Forest on the 12th.

Minimum: Mean minimum temperatures were near 2ºC above average in the far north of the Pastoral Districts. Elsewhere in the Pastoral Districts mean minimum temperatures were within 1ºC of average. The greatest temperature deviation was 1.8ºC above average at Andamooka. Mean minimum temperatures ranged from 3.3ºC at Gluepot Station to 7.8ºC at Moomba Airport. The lowest minimum was –4.3ºC at Gluepot Station on the 21st.

Mean minimum temperatures were generally within 1 degree of average across the Agricultural Areas, with the greatest deviations of 1.0ºC above average at several centres. Mean minimum temperatures ranged from 3.1ºC at Yongala to 11.9ºC at Neptune Island. The lowest minimum was –3.0ºC at Renmark Airport on the 21st.

Significant July weather

SEVERE WINDS:On Saturday 16th July, a vigorous front moved across southern South Australia and produced northwest to west wind gusts to 95 km/h at Cape Jaffa and Cape Borda.

July weather in Adelaide

Rainfall: Adelaide’s rainfall for July 2005 is 42.8 mm, recorded on 16 days. This is 35.0 mm below the average of 77.8 mm on 17 days. Last year 75.0 mm was recorded in July on 21 days. This has been the driest July since 2003 when only 39.2 mm was recorded.

The total rainfall for the first seven months of 2005 is 255.0 mm. Last year 320.8 mm was recorded over the same period. The average rainfall for the first seven months is 325.0 mm. The total rainfall for the first two months of winter 2005 is 184.6 mm. This is 21.6 mm above the average of 163.0 mm for the same period.

Temperatures: The mean maximum temperature for July 2005 is 15.7°C, which is 0.4°C above the normal July mean maximum of 15.3°C. The mean July maximum last year was 14.9°C.

Maximum temperatures ranged from 9.9°C on the 12th July to 20.8°C on the 22nd July.

The mean minimum temperature for July 2005 is 7.7°C, which is 0.3°C above the normal July mean minimum of 7.4°C. Last July, the mean minimum was 7.7°C.

Minimum temperatures ranged from 1.8°C on the 18th of July to 12.7°C on the 26th July.
