MONTHLY CLIMATE SUMMARY - SOUTH AUSTRALIAN REGIONAL OFFICE Wet October over of South AustraliaOctober rainfall was above to very much above average over most districts of the State.October rainfall Pastoral Districts:Rainfall was above to very much above average over most of the Pastoral Districts. The eastern border region of the Far North District and southern parts of the North West District recorded near average rainfall.Totals in the range 25 to 50 mm were reported from most of the Pastoral Districts, however, several centres throughout recorded totals above 50mm The highest rainfall during the month in these districts was 138 mm, recorded at Mintabie in the North West Pastoral District. Agricultural Districts:Rainfall totals over the Agricultural Districts were above average to very much above average over most areas, with a few centres in the central districts reporting their highest totals on record. Rainfall totals in excess of 100 mm were reported from centres in the Lower North, Kangaroo Island, Adelaide Plains, County Light, Mount Lofty Ranges and Lower Southeast districts. The Western Agricultural and Upper North generally recorded totals below 50mm. The remaining districts reported totals between 50 and 100mm. Three stations in the Central Districts, Roseworthy Post Office, Freeling and Mt Bold Reservoir had their wettest October on record. The highest rainfall total for October was 221mm recorded at Woodhouse in the Mount Lofty Ranges.
October temperatures Maximum: Mean maximum temperatures over the Pastoral Districts of the state were mostly above normal, with reports of October mean maxima 1 to 2°C above the average. Elsewhere in the Pastoral Districts temperatures were near normal. Mean maximum temperatures ranged from 25.5°C at Nonning, in the Northwest district to 31.9°C at Moomba Airport, in the Far North District.Mean maximum temperatures over the Agricultural Districts of the state were mostly near normal. However, several centres recorded October mean maxima between 1 to 2°C above normal. Mean maximum temperatures ranged from 16.6°C at Parawa, in the Mount Lofty Ranges District to 27.5°C at Port Augusta Airport, in the Western Agricultural District The highest maximum temperature in South Australia for October was 42.8°C at Oodnadatta on the 28th. Minimum: Mean minimum temperatures were mostly in excess of 1°C above normal across the interiors of the state and 2°C to 3°C above normal over the far northern interiors. Elsewhere temperatures were near normal. Mean minimum temperatures ranged from 7.6°C at Yongala, in the Upper North district, and Parawa, in the Mount Lofty Ranges, to 17.4°C at Moomba Airport, in the Far North District. The lowest temperature recorded in South Australia for October was minus 0.2°C recorded at several centres.
Significant October weather Thunderstorms:On the 17th, convection initiated near the South Australia - Western Australia border was responsible for producing golf ball size hail near Nullarbor and damaged cars, caravans, solar panels and windows.Severe Winds:On the 7th a low pressure system centred near Port Augusta and associated trough was responsible for gale force west to southwest winds at Coober Pedy, Woomera and Marree. Gale force northerly winds were also observed at Roseworthy ahead of the trough. Furthermore, a house roof was blown off in Renmark along with some tree damage. On the 8th, gale force westerly winds were briefly observed at Minlaton in the wake of the low pressure system from the 7th. The passage of a front associated with a low south of Kangaroo Island on the 23rd resulted in gale force southwesterly winds at Hindmarsh Island, and a gust to 91 km/h at Mt Crawford. As a high pressure system moved over South Australia behind the low from the 23rd, southwest to southerly wind gusts to 91 km/h were observed at Coober Pedy and Oodnadatta. A small low formed near southern Eyre Peninsula on the 28th and produced gale force northerly winds at Ceduna.
October weather in Adelaide Rainfall: Adelaide’s rainfall for October 2005 was 88.4mm, recorded on 17 days. This is 41.3 mm above the normal of 47.1 mm on 11 days. This was the wettest October for a quarter of a century when, in 1980, 105.0mm was recorded. The highest October rainfall ever recorded was 133.2 mm in 1949. Last year 10.6mm was recorded in October on 5 days.During the first two months of Spring Adelaide has recorded 147.6mm. This is 5.5mm above the Spring average. The total rainfall for the first ten months of 2005 was 493.4mm. Last year 483.4mm was recorded over the same period. The average rainfall for the first ten months is 507.5mm. Temperatures: The mean maximum temperature for October 2005 is 21.9°C, which is 0.3°C above the normal October mean maximum of 21.6°C. The mean October maximum last year was 23.7°C. The mean minimum temperature for October 2005 was 12.1°C, which is 0.7°C above the normal October mean minimum of 11.4°C. This has been the warmest mean minimum October temperature since 1999 when 12.8°C was recorded. Last October, the mean minimum was 11.9°C.
