MONTHLY CLIMATE SUMMARY - SOUTH AUSTRALIAN REGIONAL OFFICE

Cooler April in South Australia. Slightly above average rainfalls.

April mean maximum temperatures were slightly below and mean monthly minimum temperatures were close to average at most sites over South Australia during April 2006. Rainfall was mostly average to above average

April temperatures

Maximum: April mean maximum temperatures were below normal across the State. The Pastoral districts recorded mean temperatures generally between 1°C and 2 °C below normal while the Agricultural districts recorded mean temperatures between 1°C and 3°C below normal.

In the Pastoral districts, mean maximum temperatures ranged from 21.7°C at Yunta in the North East to 27.8°C at Moomba in the Far North district. In the Agricultural districts, mean maximum temperatures ranged from 16.2°C at Parawa, in the Mount Lofty Ranges, to 23.8°C at Kyancutta in the Western Agricultural district.

The highest maximum recorded during April was 36.1°C on the 13th at Oodnadatta Airport in the Far North district.

Minimum: April mean minimum temperatures were near or slightly below normal over most of the State. The Pastoral districts recorded mean minimum temperatures generally between 1°C and 2 °C below normal. Over the Agricultural districts recorded mean minimum temperatures were generally within 0.5°C of average.

In the Pastoral districts, mean minimum temperatures ranged from 7.3°C at Yunta in the North East, to 14.3°C at Oodnadatta in the Far North district. In the Agricultural districts, mean minimum temperatures ranged from 6.7°C at Yongala in the Upper North to 13.5°C at Pt Pirie in the Lower North.

The lowest minimum recorded during April was -0.4°C on the 16th at Yunta in the North East. The highest minimum recorded during April was 22.6°C on the 12th at Oodnadatta in the Far North.

April rainfall

Pastoral Districts:Rainfall was mostly average to above average over the Pastoral Districts during April 2006. There were areas of below and very much below average rainfall west of and including Oodnadatta, in the North West Pastoral District and the north-eastern corner of the Far North District. An area of very much above average was confined to the southern boundary of North West.

Rainfall totals over 25mm were confined to southern parts of the Northeast Pastoral District and the southern boundary of the North West. Elsewhere totals were variable and between 5 and 25mm. Several centres in the Far North and North West Pastoral Districts recorded totals below 10mm. The highest reported rainfall was 42mm recorded at Gluepot Station, in the Northeast District.

Agricultural Districts: In the Agricultural Districts rainfall was average to above average over most of the Agricultural Districts for April, with an area of very much above average rainfall over the western half of the Western Agricultural District.

Rainfall totals in excess of 50 mm were confined to most of the Lower Southeast and Mount Lofty Ranges Districts and over the western half of the Western Agricultural District. Totals below 25 mm were reported from much of the Western Agricultural and most Upper North Districts, with an area over central Eyre Peninsula with totals in the range 10 to 20mm. The remaining districts recorded totals mainly in the range 25 to 50mm.

The highest reported rainfall was 106mm at Parawa Automatic Weather Station, in the Mount Lofty Ranges District.

Significant April weather

Severe winds: On the 17th of April, a north to northwest airstream ahead of a cold front resulted in gale force winds and were frequently in excess of 40 knots. Gusts in excess of 49 knots were also observed

April weather in Adelaide

Rainfall: Adelaide’s rainfall for April 2006 was 52.4 mm, recorded on 15 days. This is 14.9 mm above the normal of 37.5 mm on 8 days. This has been the wettest April since 1998 when 105.6 mm was recorded. Last year 3.2 mm was recorded in April on 4 days.

The total rainfall for the first four months of 2006 was 110.6 mm. Last year 62.2 mm was recorded over the same period. Average rainfall for the first four months of the year is 96.6 mm.

Temperatures: The mean maximum temperature for April 2006 was 20.6°C, which is 1.9°C below the normal April mean maximum of 22.5°C. This has been the coolest April since 1996 when the mean maximum was 19.7°C The mean maximum for April last year was 26.1°C.

The mean minimum temperature for April 2006 was 12.3°C, which is exactly equal to April mean minimum. The mean minimum for April last year was 14.4°C.
