MEDIA RELEASE

100 Years of Weather Forecasts

The Commonwealth Bureau of Meteorology officially began operations in January 1908 and celebrates its Centenary during 2008. This milestone is being highlighted as part of the celebrations for World Meteorology Day. World Meteorology Day marks the signing of the Convention of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) in March 1950.

A function at the Bureau's Regional Office in Kent Town on 26th March will acknowledge the importance of the work of the Bureau through the past 100 years, and the linkages it has with WMO in ensuring weather services are appropriate to the needs of the community. The dedication and professional conduct of staff who have provided more than 30 years of service to the Bureau will be formally recognised through the presentation of long service awards

“Like my colleagues who will be receiving long service awards, I have seen great changes at the Bureau over the past 30 years,” said South Australian Regional Director Mr Andrew Watson. “When I started with the Bureau in Perth in the late 1970's, our weather forecast was for tomorrow only. Nowadays we forecast for 7 days, with just as much accuracy as we managed for one day in 1978 and we are likely to extend our forecasts to 10 days in the near future".

A new book, "Weather Prophets of South Australia" will be released at the function. This book captures many personal stories of people who have worked for the Bureau in South Australia. It includes tales from the Antarctic to the tropics, from the early 20th century to the present time. The book was written by a dedicated group of volunteers who gave many hours and much energy to the project.

“The stories in the book are a snapshot of some the activities that the Bureau has been involved with over the years, and an interesting insight into some of the characters who have worked with this organisation,” says Mr. Watson.

Change, innovation and a commitment to the community have been hallmarks of the Bureau over the past 100 years. Our confident forecast for the future is to continue to improve our weather services by utilising the latest advances in technology and the continuing efforts of our dedicated and professional people.

The World Meteorology Day Centenary function will be held at 12:30pm on Wednesday 26 March 2008 at the Bureau of Meteorology, 25 College Road, Kent Town.
