Record warm August night for Tasmania

Warmest-ever August night in Tasmania: The minimum temperature at Grove in the 24 hours to 9 am this (Tuesday) morning was 16.1 °C. This is the highest August minimum temperature ever recorded in Tasmania. It is much higher than the previous record of 15.0 °C at Swansea on 28 August 1994 and Strahan on 26 August 1977.
A mild day yesterday followed by a windy night ahead of an approaching cold front ensured the overnight temperarures were kept high. They were typically by 5 to 10 degrees above the August average.
There are currently two sets of observations being taken at Grove, during the changeover to new equipment. The 16.1 °C was recorded at the original site. The new site recorded 15.7 °C, which would also have broken the old State record. The long-term average minimum temperature at Grove in August is 2.6 °C.

Warmest-ever August night in Hobart: The minimum temperature at Hobart in the 24 hours to 9 am this (Tuesday) morning was 15.0 °C. This is the highest August minimum temperature ever recorded in Hobart, where observations reach back to 1882. The previous record in Hobart was 14.4 °C, on 19 August 1885.
The minimum of 15.0 °C at Hobart occurred at 9 am yesterday (Monday) morning, when the instruments were reset. The lowest temperature "overnight" was 16.2 °C, just after 6 am. There are not good statistics for such "overnight" minima, only those for 24-hour periods.

Very warm August day: Yesterday (Monday) was a very warm day for August, especially in the south and east of Tasmania. The highest temperature was 23.7 °C at Geeveston. This was the highest temperature recorded in August in Tasmania since Swansea reached 24.3 °C on 29 August 1982. The highest ever recorded in August is 24.5 °C at Hobart on 26 August 1977.

A generally mild winter: Warm weather has dominated over cool weather this winter across Tasmania. On average, temperatures are running about 0.5 to 1.5 degrees above normal. Several record or near-record high temperatures have been observed. (A more detailed summary of winter, and of August, will be prepared in the next few days).
Recent temperatures for individual locations are given in the Daily Weather Observations

Cooler weather ahead: Temperatures are expected to drop a little today as a weakening cold front crosses the State, to be followed by a more significant front on Wednesday. Check the current forecasts for the most recent information.
