MONTHLY CLIMATE SUMMARY - TASMANIA

Record wet days in the southeast - Tasmania in September 2005

There were fewer than normal cold fronts or periods of westerly winds affecting Tasmania during September 2005. A low passed close to the State around the 11th and 12th, bringing very heavy falls to the southeast and the north, but the west coast had less rain than usual.

Wet in the southeast: A low pressure system close to Tasmania on the 11th and 12th brought record-breaking rain in to the southeast of the State. Several locations had their wettest-ever September day in the 24 hours to 9 am on the 12th. The rain was so great that some, including Hobart Airport, had achieved their wettest-ever September by the morning of the 12th. Premaydena Hatchery on the Tasman Peninsula had the wettest single day, registering 84.4 mm in the 24 hours to 9 am on the 12th. There was very little rain in the southeast between the 18th and when a cold front crossed on the 28th.

Flooding in the north: Flooding in rivers in the north of the State at the end of August continued into the start of September, although there was little extra rain for the first week or more. A low brought rain to the north around the 11th and 12th, with the South Esk river rising above flood level once more. Diddleum in the northeast highlands registered 289.8 mm for September, making it the wettest spot in Tasmania for the month.

Relatively dry in the west: Rainfall was below average in the west of the State, as there were fewer than normal active cold fronts. Many sites in the west received only about 60 to 70 % of their normal September rain.

Few cold days: Most days saw temperatures that were close to, or above, normal. The 8th was the warmest day for many places, with temperatures up to 10 degrees above normal in some spots. There were very few cold days, the main one being the 12th when temperatures were about 5 degrees below normal. Averaged across the month, maximum (daytime) temperatures were about one-half to one degree above normal.

Mostly moderate nights: There were a few quite cool nights, particularly at the start of the month, around the 14th, and again around the 26th. However, warm weather dominated, with marked warm bursts around the 9th (with overnight temperatures about 5 to 8 °C above normal), the 23rd, and at the end of the month. Overall, average minimum (overnight) temperatures were above normal by around half a degree in most places.

Two windy bursts: There were only two main windy periods during September. The low that caused so much rain around the 11 and 12th also brought very strong southerly winds as it cleared to the east. There were also some strong westerly winds when a cold front that crossed at the end of the month.

Included in this summary are a table of State extremes,  some new records (for wettest September or wettest September day), and summary statistics for sites across the State.

Note

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 3 October 2005 . Although every effort has been made to check them, it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

"Normals" are based on all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site . Sites without normals shown do no have sufficient record for them to be calculated reliably.

The "Ranking" indicates about where rainfall this time ranks in the climate record for the site.
