MONTHLY CLIMATE SUMMARY - TASMANIA

Record warm at start - Tasmania in November 2005

November 2005 was a warm and wet month for most of Tasmania. Temperatures - especially early in the month - were above normal across the State, and some records were broken for high minimum (overnight) temperatures.

Very warm start: The first 8 or 9 days of November were very warm, with maximum temperatures well above normal. Northeasterly winds on the 7th gave Scotts Peak Dam (in the southwest) the State's highest temperature for the month of 30.3 °C. Daytime temperatures were back close to normal for most of the rest of the month - although the 17th and 25th were warm in the south and east. Averaged across the month, maximum (daytime) temperatures were about 0.8 to 1.5 degrees above normal, with the southwestern half especially warm.

Record warm nights: The temperature at Flinders Island Airport did not drop below 20.4 °C on the 3rd. This is the highest November overnight temperature ever recorded in Tasmania; the same value was registered at Strahan Airport on 30 November 2003. Several other sites had their own highest November minimum temperature on that day, or (in the southeast) on the 7th or 8th. There were a few cold nights, notably from the 26th to the 28th. Averaged across the month, minimum (overnight) temperatures were above normal by about 1 to 2 degrees, slightly less along the eastern seaboard.

Another wet month: Following the pattern set in recent months, there were several significant rainfall events. The 2nd/3rd, 10th/11th  and 25th/26th brought moderate to locally heavy falls. Unlike recent months, none of the daily totals were record-breaking, but they were enough to ensure another much wetter than normal month in the parts of the north and northeast; several sites in the north had their wettest November for many years.

Wind as well: There were a number of bursts of strong westerly winds as cold fronts crossed the State. The early morning of the 4th was especially windy, with Mount Wellington registering a gust to 165 km/h and Hobart recording 122 km/h.

Included in this summary are a table of State extremes,  some new records, and summaries for sites across the State.
Also available is a separate statement about the whole of spring.

Note

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Thursday 1 December 2005 . Although every effort has been made to check them, it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

"Normals" are based on all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. Sites without normals shown do no have sufficient record for them to be calculated reliably.

The "Ranking" indicates about where rainfall this time ranks in the climate record for the site.
