MONTHLY CLIMATE SUMMARY - TASMANIA

Warm, very wet in the north and east - Tasmania in Spring 2005

Spring 2005 (the three months September, October and November) was warm and wet for most parts of Tasmania. The north and east were especially wet, with several very heavy rainfall events.

Record warm nights: Warm nights early in November gave several sites their highest ever Spring overnight temperature. Flinders Island Airport's record November minimum temperature of 20.4 °C was just 0.2 below Tasmania's warmest Spring night, at the same place on 28 October 1977. The average overnight temperature was above normal across the State, typically by 0.5 to 1.5 degrees. Several places had their warmest Spring nights on average.

Record wet season in the north and east: A number of sites in the north and east had their wettest-ever Spring, and for many more it was the wettest for many years. At a number of sites (especially in the southeast) it was wetter in Spring 2001 than this year. Rainfall totals in the southwestern third of Tasmania were generally below normal.

Some very wet days: Much of the rain during Spring fell in just a few days, with several sites reporting individual daily totals in excess of 100 mm. Although these were enough to break monthly records in both September and October, even the 220 mm from German Town on 22 October could not compete with the previous Spring daily rainfall record of over 273 mm at Gray on 4 November 1975.

Warm days:  Averaged across the season, maximum (daytime) temperatures were typically 0.3 to 1.1 degrees above normal (although Fingal and Scamander were fractionally below normal).  A few sites had their highest-ever mean daily Spring maximum temperature.

Included in this summary are a table of State extremes,  some new records, and summaries for sites across the State.
Also available are separate statements covering September, October and November.

Note

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 11 am on Thursday 1 December 2005 . Although every effort has been made to check them, it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

"Normals" are based on all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site . Sites without normals shown do no have sufficient record for them to be calculated reliably.

The "Ranking" indicates about where rainfall this time ranks in the climate record for the site.
