SEASONAL CLIMATE SUMMARY - TASMANIA
Warm days in March, cold days in April and May: There were
several bursts of warm to hot weather through March, notably the 3rd
(when Campania reached 36.1 °C) and the 12th. But all this changed
in April, when several sites had record low mean daily maximum
temperatures. The cold weather continued into May, and averaged across
the three months maximum (daytime) temperatures were about half a
degree below normal near the coasts and about a degree below normal
inland. Some sites (including Launceston and Scottsdale) had their lowest-ever mean daily maximum temperature for autumn, for others (including Hobart and Swansea) it was the coldest for many years.
Cold night in May: The temperature at Liawenee dropped to -10.5 °C on the morning of 30 May, the lowest value ever
recorded during autumn in Tasmania (the previous autumn record was -9.7
°C also at Liawenee in May 2001; the lowest temperature ever recorded in
Tasmania is -13 °C at Shannon, Tarraleah and Butlers Gorge in June
1983). A few other sites also had their coldest-ever autumn temperature.
Averaged minimum (overnight) temperatures were below normal during
autumn 2006, by about a degree in most areas. Some places (including
Launceston and Bicheno) had their lowest-ever mean daily minimum temperature for autumn, at others (including Hobart and Orford) it was the oldest for many years.
Wet weeks, dry weeks: Rainfall was well down on normal for
most areas during March, but from the last week of March through to early May westerly winds and frequent cold fronts
brought plenty of rain to most areas. The rain eased off in most areas for the last three weeks of
the season. Above-normal autumn totals were registered in the
near King Island, near the southwestern highlands, and in an area south of
Launceston. There were below-normal totals in the southeast, the northeast
coast and parts of the northwest coast. Whilst no records were broken, a few stations had their wettest autumn for many years, whilst a few others had their driest autumn for many years.
Snow on the highlands: Snowfalls were relatively common on
the highlands during April and early May, and although statistics of
snow are difficult to obtain it is clear that this autumn has been one
of the "snowiest" for a while.
Included in this summary are a table of extremes,
some new records,
and summaries for sites across Tasmania. Separate summaries have also been prepared for each of the months of March, April and May 2006.

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 9 am on Monday 5 June 2006. Although every effort has been made to check them, it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.
"Normals" are based on all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site. Sites without normals shown do no have sufficient record for them to be calculated reliably.
The "Ranking" indicates about where rainfall this time ranks in the climate record for the site.
