CLIMATE SUMMARY - TASMANIA

Record dry in many areas - Tasmania in winter 2006

There were far fewer cold fronts crossing Tasmania during winter 2006 than is typical for the time of year, ensuring rainfall was well down on normal across the state. Some very cold nights during the season gave way to some especially warm days at the very end.

Record dry winter: Large parts of northern, central and southeast Tasmania had their driest winter on record, or their driest for many years. All of the state was drier than normal. The west coast was the wettest part of the state, but even Lake Margaret's 702 mm was almost 200 mm below normal. The individual months of both June and August were particularly dry in the northeastern half of the state, although the northeast highlands were quite wet in July.

Record dry start to the year: With the notable exception of the very wet April, most of the months this year have been drier than normal in much of the state. Added together, this has created well-below-normal rain in the northeastern two-thirds of the state, with record low totals in parts of the north and the southeast, including stations with more than 100 years of record such as Hobart, Sorell and Ulverstone.

Record warm end to winter: Strong northwest winds brought record warm winter temperatures in the last few days of August. On the very last day of winter, Campania (with 25.0 °C)  and Scamander (24.9 °C) both broke the old record of 24.5 °C held by Hobart since 1977. Many other sites also had their warmest-ever winter day.

Some cold nights: With high pressure systems often close to Tasmania, there have been plenty of cold nights. Averaged across the three months, minimum (overnight) temperatures have been below normal by about half a degree in most areas, although fractionally above normal near the southeast coast. At some sites, mean minimum temperatures were the coldest they have been for many years.

Outlook for rain not promising: The Bureau of Meteorology's Seasonal Climate Outlook for spring 2006 shows that dry weather is more likely than wet, especially in the north of Tasmania. This does not mean that spring is certain to be dry.

Note

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 10 am  on Friday 1 September 2006 . Although every effort has been made to check them, it is possible that results will change as new information becomes available.

"Normals" are based on all available years of record, which vary widely from site to site . Sites without normals shown do no have sufficient record for them to be calculated reliably.

The "Ranking" indicates about where rainfall this time ranks in the climate record for the site.
