MONTHLY CLIMATE SUMMARY - VICTORIA

Above average rainfall in NW Victoria, Average rainfall elsewhere - Victoria in August 2004

August 2004 has seen welcome slightly above average rainfall falling across the grain growing Mallee and Wimmera Districts, with most other areas receiving near to average totals.

In the Mallee, Annuello received 47.2 mm (normal: 33.0 mm), Murrayville received 45.6 mm (normal: 33.9 mm), and Walpeup received 44.2 mm (normal: 35.4 mm), whilst Mildura received 24.6 mm (normal: 28.7 mm).
In the Wimmera, Yanac North received 63.2 mm (normal: 47.9 mm), Nhill received 66.9 mm (normal: 51.2 mm), and Kaniva received 61.8 mm (normal: 57.5 mm), whilst St Arnaud received 48.6 mm (normal: 62.1 mm).

Heavier totals were recorded in the eastern suburbs, with Croydon receiving 107.1 mm (normal: 93.8 mm), and Warrandyte receiving 110.0 mm (normal: 76.4 mm).  Melbourne recorded 10 consecutive day of rain, 2nd to 11th August.  The longest "wet spell" for 8 years!  The last time this occurred was in June 1996.  The longest wet spell ever is 18 days in 1934.

Over the Winter as a whole, rainfall was close to average in most Districts - the exceptions being Gippsland and the Northern Country, both of which received slightly below average falls.  Melbourne received 137.2 mm for the season (normal: 148.7 mm).

Temperatures:

August 2004 temperatures averaged a degree above normal during the daytime (largely on account of an exceptional warm spell towards the end of the month) and near normal overnight.
The month's warmest day was August 25, when Mildura reached a summery 27.9 deg C, Hopetoun 27.6 deg C, Walpeup 27.5 deg C, and Ouyen 27.4 deg C.
The month's coldest night was that of August 15/16, when Yarrawonga's temperature plunged to minus 6.8 deg C, and Echuca's to minus 3.0 deg C.

Melbourne's average maximum temperature of 16.4 deg C was relatively warm in contrast to a normal of 15.0 deg C, but the average concealed a bitterly cold Saturday (August 14), when the maximum temperature was only 9.8 deg C (the lowest maximum temperature in August for 26 years - since 12 August 1978, when the maximum temperature was 9.6 deg C). 22.9 deg C, recorded on 28 August, was the highest maximum temperature in August for 5 years - since 31 August 1999, when the maximum temperature was 23.3 deg C.   Melbourne enjoyed 3 consecutive days above 20°C, the longest "warm spell" in August since 1999.  Melbourne's average minimum temperature was 8.0 deg C (normal: 7.4 deg C).

Over the Winter as a whole, both maximum and minimum temperatures averaged about half a degree above normal.  For the season, Melbourne's average minimum temperature was 8.2 deg (normal: 7.1 deg C), whilst the average maximum temperature was 15.2 deg C (normal: 14.3 deg C).
