MONTHLY CLIMATE SUMMARY - VICTORIA

Record high temperatures; late soaking rains in central district

Rainfall:

October 2004 has seen dry weather dominating much of the State, although welcome near average rainfall fell in the central district.  In the northwest, Mildura received 4 mm (normal: 28 mm); in the southwest, Ballarat received 38 mm (normal: 71 mm); in the northeast, Benalla received 20 mm (normal: 65 mm); whilst in the southeast, Sale received 41 mm (normal: 55 mm).

In contrast to these dry figures, the formation of a deep low late in the month over eastern Bass Strait rainfall in the central districts was close to or above normal with Melbourne receiving 65 mm (normal: 65 mm). Over a two-day period, about 50 mm of rain fell across central Victoria as a consequence of the formation of a deep low late in the month over eastern Bass Strait.

Temperature:

A mid-month heatwave was accompanied by temperatures rising over 30 deg C across the State, with Mildura and Walpeup registering the State's highest October reading on record ... 40.2 deg C on October 12. Ouyen also registered its all-time October high, with 40.1 deg C on the same day. Mildura's mean maximum temperature of 27.0 deg C was the highest October mean on record ... beating the previous record of 26.9 deg C in 1991.

Across the State, daytime temperatures were about 2 deg C above normal in most districts, the warmest October maxima since 1991, whilst night-time temperatures were generally between half a degree and one degree above normal except in parts of the North where temperatures were slightly below normal.  In the northwest, Mildura minimum and maximum temperatures averaged 10.3 deg C to 27.0 deg C (normals: 10.0/23.9); in the southwest, Ballarat minimum and maximum temperatures averaged 6.2 deg C to 17.8 deg C (normals: 6.4/16.6); in the northeast, Benalla minimum and maximum temperatures averaged 7.6 deg C to 22.6 deg C (normals: 7.5/21.2); whilst in the southeast, Sale minimum and maximum temperatures averaged 7.3 deg C to 19.8 deg C (normals: 7.6/19.2).

In the central district, Melbourne minimum and maximum temperatures averaged 11.4 deg C to 21.1 deg C (normals: 8.7/17.2), whilst Echuca minimum and maximum temperatures averaged 5.5 deg C to 17.7 deg C (normals: 10.3/19.6).

Included in this summary are a table of State extremes, some new records, and summaries for sites across the State.  Links to the Seasonal Outlook and El Nino Wrap Up.

Note

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 1 PM on Monday 1 November 2004 . Although every effort has been made to check them, it is possible that results may change as new information becomes available.

Long term averages are calculated using the WMO standard of 1961 to 1990.

Localities with blank averages may not have long enough records for a WMO average. However, climate averages for nearby Victoria localities are available here.

Please use the following localities to cover these regions: Coldstream for the Yarra Glen area; Ceberus for the Mornington Peninsula; Morwell for the Latrobe Valley; Mangalore for Seymour; Mt Hotham for the Alpine area.

Daily Weather Observations for selected Victoria localities are available here.
