MONTHLY CLIMATE SUMMARY - VICTORIA

Dry weather returns - Victoria in March 2005

After a wet February, March 2005 was dry across much of the State, with some Districts receiving less than 10% of their usual rainfall allocation.

Preliminary figures show that average rainfall across the Mallee, Wimmera and Northern Country totalled less than 5 mm, while the Western Plains, West Central and North Central Districts averaged between 5 and 10 mm.

Only East Gippsland, with 59.9 mm (normal: 61.1 mm) received more than half that normally received in March.

The month was unusually cool, with overnight temperatures averaging between 1 and 2 degrees below average, and daytime temperatures averaging about 1 degree below normal.

In Melbourne, 8.2 mm was received (normal: 43.5 mm); the mean minimum temperature was 13.7 deg C (normal: 14.1 deg C); and, the mean maximum temperature was 23.8 deg C (normal: 24.1 deg C).
