MONTHLY CLIMATE SUMMARY - VICTORIA

A month of contrasts - Victoria in August 2005

August 2005 was a month of  contrasts.

During a cold outbreak on the 10th, snow fell at many sea level localities (for example, snow covered the beach near Inverloch during that day).

In contrast, during a warm and windy spell at the end of the month (Melbourne Airport registered a gust of 102 km/hr on the 30th), a number of centres registered their highest August minimum temperature on record (for example, Mildura Airport, with 18.8 deg C during the night of 29th/30th). Mt Hotham recorded a Victorian wind gust record of 198 km/hr, whilst Mildura Airport equalled their August wind gust record (91 km/hr) during the evening of the 30th.

Overall, night-time temperatures during August averaged close to normal at most places, whilst daytime temperatures were mostly about 1 deg C above normal. Over winter as a whole, both minimum and maximum temperatures were about 1 deg C above normal in most districts.

August rainfall totals were close to normal. Over winter as a whole, rainfall was somewhat above normal in the Northeast and in East Gippsland, somewhat below normal in Central Victoria and in West Gippsland, and near to normal elsewhere.

In Melbourne, the average minimum temperature for the month was 8.2 deg C (normal 7.4 deg C), whilst the average maximum temperature was 16.3 deg C (normal 15.1 deg C). 60.4 mm of rain fell (normal 57.4 mm).  Over winter as a whole, it was warmer than usual (mean minimum: 8.4 deg C, normal: 7.1 deg C; mean maximum: 15.9 deg C, normal: 14.3 deg C), and rainfall was close to average (141.4 mm, normal: 148.7 mm).

Westerlies characterised the month's weather maps, with the rapid passage of fronts, except for a brief period later in August, when a strong high established itself over southeastern Australia.

Included in this summary are a table of State extremes, some new records, and summaries for sites across the State. Visit our maps of rainfall and temperatures for this month.

Note

This statement has been prepared based on information available at 2 PM on Wednesday 31 August 2005 . Although every effort has been made to check them, it is possible that results may change as new information becomes available.

Long term averages are calculated using the WMO standard of 1961 to 1990.

Localities with blank averages may not have long enough records for a WMO average. However, climate averages for nearby Victoria localities are available here.

Please use the following localities to cover these regions: Coldstream for the Yarra Glen area; Ceberus for the Mornington Peninsula; Morwell for the Latrobe Valley; Mangalore for Seymour; Mt Hotham for the Alpine area.

Daily Weather Observations for selected Victoria localities are available here.
