MONTHLY CLIMATE SUMMARY - VICTORIA

Wet in the north and west - Victoria in October 2005

Rainfall Summary

Rainfall across Victoria for October was well above average in the north and west of the state, with totals almost twice the average. Conditions were relatively dry in the eastern half of the state with  totals generally less than half the average. The bulk of the rain fell in the period 21 to 26 October associated with  a complex low pressure system.  Echuca's rainfall for the month was exceptional with 118mm. (Average 41mm). This was the highest October total since 1975 when 162.4mm was recorded.

Temperature Summary

Maximum temperatures were mostly less than a degree below average in the Northern half of the State, but were a degree or two above average in the South and East of the State. The South Gippsland area experienced near record average daytime temperatures. Colac was a notable exception with 15.1 deg, 3.4 deg below normal. Minima were generally a degree or so above average and ranged mostly from 8 to 10 degrees.

Synoptic Situation

A cold front traversed the state on the 6th, and a complex low pressure system on the 9th. Further frontal activity occurred on the 11th and 14th. Low pressure systems were located over the state from the 21st to the 26th. Widespread storms resulted in the north and west of the state, and produced locally heavy falls of rain, and hail.

Melbourne Summary

Melbourne's maximum and minimum temperatures were both around a degree and a half above average. (Max. 21.2 deg., Normal 19.6 deg., Min. 11.9 deg. Normal 10.3 deg.). Meanwhile rainfall was well below average with just 39mm, compared to an average of 65mm. Melbourne's maximum temperature exceeded 20 deg. for 17 consecutive days, from the 15th to the 31st October. This beats the previous record of 11 days set in 1951.
