MONTHLY CLIMATE SUMMARY - VICTORIA

Warm month, wet in the North - Victoria in November 2005

Rainfall Summary

November delivered above average rainfall to the Northern and Eastern areas of Victoria. Some locations in the North Central area of Victoria received twice their monthly average. Most of the rainfall in this area fell during widespread severe thunderstorms on the 8th, that caused flash flooding.  It was generally a dry month for the South West and Far West of the Victoria with totals just over half the expected average.

Temperature Summary

November was a warm month over most of the state.  This was a result of a very warm start to the month with well above average temperatures sustained for the first 9 days of November.  The second half of the month experienced regular cold fronts passing across the state resulting in cooler conditions.  Some locations in the East and North East of Victoria broke minimum temperature record during a very warm night on the 3rd.  Due to an inland low pressure system, humidities were very high during the first week of November resulting in uncomfortable conditions.

Significant Weather Systems

An inland low on the 8th produced widespread thunderstorms over Northern Victoria producing flash flooding and causing significant damage to local townships.  Echuca recorded 51mm in a couple of hours, which is the highest November fall since 1925 when 77mm fell.

Early morning thunderstorms and heavy rainfall were reported on the 15th as an inland trough passed over Central Victoria.

An active cold front produced widespread thunderstorms and strong winds across the state on the 25th.
