Victorian weather office set to move

The Bureau of Meteorology’s Victoria Regional office will move next year to allow for the expansion of new services at the Bureau’s Head Office at 700 Collins Street, Docklands. But the Victorian office is not moving far, with plans for a new home currently under negotiation in the Docklands.

The move will allow the Bureau to accommodate its tsunami warning services, expand climate change research, and make room for new water information activities. The move will affect about 130 staff, with more than 600 staff remaining in Collins Street.

The Bureau’s Acting Director, Gary Foley, said: “The move follows the Bureau’s expanded responsibilities and demands for increased services and information in areas vital to the nation’s future, including tsunami warnings, climate change and water information.

“The Victorian Regional office will move to make way for these services because it is most suited to a stand-alone operation. Currently all our Regional Offices operate in this fashion,” he said. “During the move, Victorians will continue to receive the high standard of weather information that they expect from the Bureau of Meteorology.”
