Severe Weather and potential Flood event for eastern Victoria this weekend

The Bureau of Meteorology is expecting severe weather in eastern parts Victoria. An intense low pressure system is expected to develop over eastern Bass Strait on Saturday.

The low pressure system is expected to impact on the Gippsland region from early Saturday morning causing widespread heavy rain with flooding and very strong winds well into Sunday.

Heavy rainfall is expected over Gippsland and the ranges during the weekend. Falls of 50mm to 100mm are expected over extensive areas with higher totals likely in exposed areas in East Gippsland and the ranges. Western and northern Victoria should receive less rainfall.

Strong winds are expected to accompany the heavy rainfall with gusts over 100 km/h peaking at up to 150 km/h on Saturday night in some areas. Eastern Bass Strait can expect wave heights to reach 8 metres.

The combination of strong to gale force winds, heavy rainfall and low temperatures will pose a threat to livestock over southern and mountain Victoria.
