VICTORIAN MONTHLY CLIMATE SUMMARY (January 2004)

Cool January for Victoria

Maximum temperatures
Temperatures across Victoria have been well below average with many places experiencing their coolest January for 10 or 12 years.  The largest maximum temperature anomalies were recorded in Western Victoria (Mallee, Wimmera and Western Districts) with temperatures as much as 4 degrees below the long term average.  Central Victoria experienced a cool January as well with temperatures 2 to 3 degrees below average, whilst the Eastern areas (Gippsland) recorded temperatures around 1 degree below average.  The highest temperature recorded in Victoria was at Ouyen with 42.2°C recorded on the 3rd.  Temperatures were moderated by prevailing South Westerly winds for most of the month.

Minimum temperatures
Overnight minimum temperatures have been well below average across Victoria.  Western areas of Victoria have had overnight temperatures 3 to 4 degrees below average.  The Eastern half of Victoria have experienced cool nights with temperatures up to 2 degrees below average.

Rainfall
Rainfall across Northern Victoria (Northern Country, Mallee) was below average with towns in this area recording single digit totals over 1 or 2 days.  The area stretching from the Wimmera district to Gippsland experienced average rainfall with shower activity towards the end of the month.  Southern areas of the Western district and parts of Central district received above average rainfall courtesy of heavy shower and thunderstorm activity on the 30th.  The majority of the month leading up to the 30th was dry with only light shower activity in the early part of January.
