August the driest in Perth in 15 years

Rainfall: August rainfall in Perth this year was well below average. The city received 81.2 millimetres over 14 days compared with the average of 135mm over 17 days. It was Perth's driest August since 1987, when only 67.4mm was recorded. The heaviest daily rainfall last month was 15.8mm on 9 August, the lowest August extreme daily rainfall for 11 years, after 13.8mm fell on 1 August, 1991. Historically, August rainfall has ranged from a low of 11.8mm in 1902 to 318.3mm in 1945. Total rainfall for the eight-month period ending 31 August was 580.4mm, below the average of 699mm.

Maximum temperatures: The mean daily maximum temperature for Perth in August of 18.6 degrees Celsius was near the average of 18 degrees. Daily maxima ranged from a cool 15.3 degrees on the 15th to a warm 25.3 degrees on the 24th, the highest August maximum temperature since 27.2 degrees was recorded on 26 August, 1998.

Minimum temperatures: The mean daily minimum temperature for Perth in August was 7.1 degrees, below the average of 8 degrees. Daily minima ranged from a cold 1.4 degrees on the 13th, which is the equal second lowest minimum temperature on record, shared with 11 August 1997 and 4 August 2000. The record lowest is 1.3 degrees on 21 August 2000. The highest minimum temperature of 12.7 degrees occurred on the 25th. Perth recorded 10 cold nights in August when the temperature was 5 degrees or lower, three more than the long-term average of seven nights.
