ANNUAL WESTERN AUSTRALIAN CLIMATE STATEMENT 2005

One of WA's hottest years on record

Despite the abnormally cool conditions experienced over areas near the west coast, particularly in the latter part of the year, Western Australia in 2005 has officially recorded one of its two warmest years on record. Averaged over the entire state, data collected by the Bureau of Meteorology indicate that WA's annual mean temperature for 2005 was 0.92°C above the standard 1961-90 average. This puts 2005 alongside 1991 as the two warmest years since reliable, widespread temperature observations became available in 1910. The mean maximum temperature in 2005 was the second-highest on record (behind 1994) and the mean minimum was third-highest (behind 1998 and 1991).

WA mean temperatures are calculated from a network of high-quality, mostly rural, observing stations. The Bureau of Meteorology Research Centre and National Climate Centre have undertaken extensive quality checking to ensure that the temperature records from these sites have not been compromised by changes in site location, exposure or instrumentation over time.

Fitzroy Crossing's mean maximum temperature in 2005 was 37.1°C, measured at the airport. Only once in the past has a higher figure been officially recorded in Western Australia, when Wyndham averaged 37.3°C in 1992.

WA's mean rainfall in 2005 was 306 mm, well below the average figure of 352 mm for the standard 1961-90 reference period. Again there were wide variations across the state, with most agricultural areas receiving average to above-average rainfall.

Not all data for 2005 have yet been received and the Bureau's quality checking procedures will take further time to complete. Preliminary figures indicate the following extremes for WA in 2005:
