Nyang breaks highest February Temperature Record
On Monday 16 February Nyang registered a maximum temperature of 49.4° C (120.9° F) breaking the record for the highest February temperature in Australia, previously 49.2° C at Mardie. This was the highest temperature recorded in Australia since 13 January 1979 when Forrest on the Nullarbor recorded 49.8° C.
Monday’s maximum was also the highest ever temperature at Nyang (previously 48.4° C on 31 December 1997) since records began in 1972.
Approximately 150 km south of Onslow in the state’s northwest, Nyang continues to experience one of its hottest summers on record. The average maximum temperature this summer is 43.4° C, three degrees above the long term average.
Meteorologist Joe Courtney said that rising temperatures over the last few days were caused by continuing hot dry winds from inland Australia.
