Satellite images of the severe thunderstorms
on 2-3 December 2003

The satellite images below show clouds passing over Melbourne during the storms of the 2nd and 3rd of December 2003. The image on the left is a true-colour image made up from the visible and infrared channels on board the NOAA-16 satellite. It was taken at 4pm (local time) on 2nd December, and shows the large mass of cloud to the east of Port Phillip Bay which affected Melbourne during the afternoon.

The image on the right is a false-colour image comprised of only the infrared channels from the NOAA-17 satellite. The image was recored at 12:30am (local time) on the 3rd December, and shows the mass of cloud around the northern parts of Port Phillip Bay which affected the city in the early morning.

Satellite images received from the USA's NOAA series of polar orbiting satellites and processed by the Commonweath Bureau of Meteorology.
