On the 28th of October, 2005, the Bureau of Meteorology will have their first new high resolution Doppler radar officially commisioned. The radar is located on the northern outskirts of Adelaide, in Buckland Park. It is ideally positioned to monitor weather across Adelaide and the Mount Lofty Ranges and will now serve as the premier radar for the Adelaide region. It also has an excellent view of the Mid North, Yorke Peninsula and Murray regions.
The public will have easy access to the data via the Bureau's web site, where radar images will be displayed at four times the resolution of other radar images and updated every ten minutes. This state-of-the-art radar also has Doppler capability, which enables forecasters to "see" the wind flow, as well as the rainfall intensity associated with weather systems. This extra information can provide valuable clues about the potential severity of thunderstorms and other hazardous weather affecting the Adelaide region.
