Tropical Cyclone "Frances", Category 2, currently lies to the north of Derby
(WA). Deep convection and frequent thunderstorm activity can be seen near the
centre of the Tropical Cyclone, with thin high level cloud streaming off across
the Kimberley and northern half of the Northern Territory. Frances is moving
west southwest at 21km/h and is expected to remain over the Timor Sea for the
next 24 hours. However, gales may impact the northwest Kimberley coast during
today.

A southerly airflow is maintained along the coast of New South Wales and eastern
Victoria, with a trough of low pressure embedded in the flow currently observed
near the NSW/Qld border. Areas of low cloud linger along the coast of NSW, with
some enhanced shower activity and convective cloud in the vicinity of the
embedded trough.

A high pressure system lies over the western coast of South Australia, which is
trapping moisture near the ground. This is causing widespread regions of low
cloud over eastern SA and western parts of NSW and Victoria.

A weak cold front is moving southeastwards away from Tasmania, with a trough
extending towards the Tasmanian east coast. Patchy low and middle level cloud is
seen covering the state, while thin high cloud is moving quickly to the
northeast, transported by strong upper level winds.

Moisture in the middle levels of the atmosphere is being carried down from the
Indian Ocean across the interior of Western Australia by a middle level trough.
Areas of middle level cloud are observed over the southern interior and coast,
while upper level cloud is being dragged eastward across the northern interior
by an upper level jetstream.
