A broad, slow moving high pressure system centred over the southeast of the country dominates the synoptic pattern. This is keeping skies mostly clear across the east and north of the continent, apart from some low level cloud along the eastern seaboard coastline.
A strong cold front is crossing New Zealand, bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms in a pool of very cold air.
A weak upper level trough is generating a band of patchy cloud with isolated showers across Western Australia, South Australia and the Bight, as well as a few isolated thunderstorms near the Pilbara coast in the northwest.
Elsewhere, a broad area of convective cloud lies over tropical waters to the north of Australia, while a cold front connected to a deep low over the Southern Ocean is approaching southern West Australia.
