A broad area of low pressure covers most of northern and eastern Australia. A
trough extends from northern WA, through the interior of the NT and southwest
QLD to northeast NSW. The trough then extends further through the Tasman Sea
towards New Zealand. The instability associated with the trough combined with a
warm moist airmass is resulting in middle level cloud with widespread showers
and thunderstorms across most of the country including through northern WA,
southern NT, SA, southern QLD, NSW and VIC.

Regions of QLD and the NT northeast of the trough are mainly hot and dry with
clear skies.

A monsoon trough and a weak tropical low south of Java are enhancing the shower
and thunderstorm activity in the region.
