The Sub-Tropical Ridge, or the belt linking the high pressure systems, stretches across the middle of the continent and maintains mainly clear skies. Embedded cold fronts with associated cloud are south of this in the vigorous westerly airstream over the Southern Ocean and Tasmania.

Areas of low cloud are over southwest Western Australia and the North Tropical coast of Queensland in moist onshore airstreams.
