Summer School Curriculum

Curriculum

The course curriculum will focus on ocean modelling (Physical), coupled modelling, ocean data assimilation, ocean observing systems, ocean prediction systems and applications as outlined below. As much as possible the course material will be self contained, however some familiarity with fundamentals of mathematics, statistics and the english language will be assumed. Prior exposure to university courses on fluid dynamics, computational fluid dynamics, applied mathematics, statistics will be an asset. Students who have limited knowledge in any of these areas are encouraged to familiarise themselves prior to participating in the course. All students are encouraged to revise their knowledge of oceanography with the following online resources an exellent low cost place to start.

Some relevant books with worthwhile background material:

The course material will be presented in the form of lectures and computer based tutorials. All students will recieve a copy of the lecture notes and related course material on CD during the course. Active participation will be encouraged throughout the lectures and tutorials. Participants will be asked to provide a presentation on the results from their tutorial/assignments. Participants should also prepare a short presentation (5 slides) on their research or current role prior to arrival.

The provisional summer school curriculum will consist of a lectue series conducted on the topics shown below.
