BMRC Modelling Workshop on Modelling and Predicting Extreme Weather Events', 11-13 November 2002

The Bureau of Meteorology Research Centre (BMRC) will hold its 14th annual Modelling Workshop from 11 to 13 November 2002. This year's workshop, exploring the theme Modelling and Predicting Extreme Weather Events, will be conducted in the 5th floor conference facilities in the Bureau's Head Office in Melbourne.

A number of prominent scientists from overseas, as well as the Bureau, CSIRO, and Australian universities, will give presentations on five themes spanning 'extreme weather' across a wide range of temporal and spatial scales:

Modelling and predicting extreme weather at the mesoscale
Keynotes: Stan Benjamin (NOAA/FSL): Modelling thunderstorms and mesoscale weather
Graham Mills (BMRC): Modelling extreme weather using NWP models

Modelling and predicting tropical cyclones
Keynote: Noel Davidson (BMRC): Modelling tropical cyclones

Modelling and predicting rainfall extremes

The use of ensembles in modelling and predicting extreme weather
Keynote: Francois Lalaurette (ECMWF): Ensemble forecasts–can they produce useful early warnings?

Climate change and extreme weather
Keynote: Kerry Emanuel (MIT): The influence of climate change on tropical cyclones
