This is a series of eight lectures
presented in Tehran (Iran) to students from the Islamic Republic of Iran
Meteorological Organization (IRIMO). The course was entitled "Statistics
and climatology" and was jointly organized by IRIMO and the Regional
Meteorological Training Centre (RMTC) in Tehran and supported by the World
Meteorological Organization (WMO).
These lectures have been put together thanks to the help of several
BMRC scientists from the Climate Forecasting Group (Dr. N. Nicholls, W.
Drosdowsky, Dr. S. Power and Dr. M. Wheeler) and outside the Bureau of Meteorology
(Pr. I. Jolliffe, Dr. H. von Storch).
The 8 lectures cover the following
areas:
-
Lecture I: "The climate system and its observation"
-
Lecture II: "Mean, variability and predictability"
-
Lecture III: "Spatio-temporal linkages within the system"
-
Lecture IV: "Significance testing and climate research"
-
Lecture V: "Measuring skill and forecast verification"
-
Lecture VI: "How to develop a statistical scheme: a step by step approach"
-
Lecture VII: "Examples of statistical predictions in climate"
-
Lecture VIII: "Learning more on statistics and climatology using the Internet"
