RESEARCH INTERESTS AND EXPERTISE.

Tropical convection and its interaction with larger scale circulations, precipitation forecasting and verification, monsoon meteorology, tropical cyclones, synoptic scale weather systems including cold fronts and cut-off lows, interannual variability including the Southern Oscillation and seasonal prediction. Techniques used include observational analysis, theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. Design and implementation of major field experiments: One of the lead organisers and researchers in the Australian Monsoon Experiment (AMEX), 1986-87. Participant in the International Organization of the Coupled Ocean Atmosphere Response Experiment (TOGA-COARE), 1992-93.

Very recent work has focussed on development of statistically-based seasonal forecast models for operational use in developing countries: specifically Indonesia and south-east India.
