Conclusions
A wave model run over the time period of the the 1998 Sydney to Hobart yacht race compares well with observations, both from competitors in the race, and with instrumented observations at Kingfish B Oil platform in Bass Strait.
During the peak of the storm, there were crossing seas, with an easterly swell system potentially steepened by a strong East Australian Current.
Upgrades to the bathymetry and propagation numerics within the wave model had a significant impact on its accuracy.
It is possible to tune the physics of the wave model to get a better match with observations, but care needs to be taken when translating that tuning to other situations where the wind fields may have different error characteristics.
