Successful applicants will undertake a one year specialised training course interspersed with on-the-job training. Periods of on-the-job training are spent in the Regional Maintenance Centre in the Region. Trainees attend a total of 30 weeks (spread over the one year training period) at the Bureau's Training Centre in Melbourne. This covers workshop practices, general meteorology and the installation, maintenance and operational theory of the Bureau's broad range of electronic systems, radar telemetry and communications equipment.

The Bureau of Meteorology is currently seeking graduates with a major in physical science, mathematics or meteorology for its 2009 Graduate Meteorology training program. Successful applicants will be employed as a Graduate APS (Meteorologist), and will undertake a 10-month nationally accredited Graduate Diploma in Meteorology training course at the Bureau's Training Centre in Melbourne, commencing in late January 2009. Course graduation is followed by advancement as a weather forecaster, with a posting to one of our regional centres. An enthusiastic IT professional is required to improve the management of Australia's climate database. The occupant of the position will lead the maintenance, enhancement and evaluation of the core IT systems used in the Data Management Group in the National Climate Centre. Design and develop new applications, enhance existing applications, and manage staff and contractors. This role requires significant skills in software engineering, object oriented design and development, and coding of applications using JAVA, SQL and PL/SQL in a relational database environment, while project management skills are desirable. A degree in Computer Science (or related discipline) that provides eligibility for Membership to the Australian Computer Society is highly desirable.

The Perth office of the Bureau of Meteorology, through its Commercial Weathers Service section, is seeking a professional meteorologist to provide a range of specialised meteorological and related services and products to its commercial customers in the mining, farming, energy and other weather dependant sectors. Note: Several employment opportunities will be offered by Commercial Weather Services, Perth on an ongoing and non- ongoing (temporary contract) basis. Specified contracts for non-ongoing full and part time positions will be made available for periods of 1 to 3 years. Whilst ongoing employment is open to Australian citizens only, both Australian and overseas applicants are invited to apply for the non-ongoing positions. Some relocation expenses will be accommodated by the Bureau of Meteorology. Successful Non-Australian citizens may be sponsored by the Bureau of Meteorology under a Temporary (long stay) Standard Business visa (subclass 457).
