NSW SEVERE WEATHER WARNING

Hazardous Winds, Flash Flooding and Damaging Surf
For people in Mid North Coast and Hunter.

Issued at 4:00 pm on Tuesday 19 October 2004

Synoptic Situation: 3:00 pm EST Tuesday
A low expected to develop off the southern Queensland coast this afternoon is expected to move slowly south to lie off the far northern NSW coast by tonight.

This is an update of the warning issued at 3:40 pm Tuesday.

Winds are expected to average over 65 km/h, peak wind gusts are expected to exceed 90km/h about the coastal parts of the Mid North Coast and the Hunter north of about Norah Head on Wednesday.

Very heavy rain is expected to cause flash flooding in the Mid North Coast and Hunter.

Damaging surf conditions, with waves exceeding 5 metres in the surf zone, are likely to produce significant beach erosion between Seal Rocks and Smoky Cape. Emergency services advise you to keep clear of fallen power lines, stay indoors away from windows and keep children indoors.

Emergency services advise you don't walk, ride your bicycle or drive through flood water, and keep clear of creeks and storm drains.

Emergency services advise you check your property regularly for erosion or inundation by sea water, and if necessary, raise goods and electrical items.

Surf Life Saving Australia recommends that you stay out of the water and stay well away from surf-exposed areas.

For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local NSW SES unit on telephone number 13 2500.

The next warning is due to be issued by 9:30 pm Tuesday 19th of October.
