Bureau of Meteorology: Tropical Cyclone Information Bulletin

Introduction

Tropical cyclone information bulletins are designed to provide information to people on existing cyclones that do not pose a short-term threat to coastal communities in Australia.

When is a Tropical Cyclone Information Bulletin Issued?

Tropical Cyclone Information Bulletins are issued whenever a tropical cyclone exists in Australian waters, but is not expected to cause winds in excess of 62km/h (gale force) over land in Australia* within 48 hours.

How often is a Tropical Cyclone Information Bulletin issued?

While the cyclone remains in Australian waters, but not expected to cause land-based gales within 48 hours, a tropical cyclone information bulletin will be issued every six hours.

What information is included in the Tropical Cyclone Information Bulletin?

Each Tropical Cyclone Information Bulletin will consist of the following information:

  • The cyclone name (if it has been named)
  • The latest observed location of the cyclone centre
  • The expected developments (path and intensity)
  • A statement of longer term threats.
An associated track map may be issued.
Who is the target audience of Tropical Cyclone Information Bulletins?

All land based communities.
Note that separate marine warnings will be issued, and all mariners should refer to these warnings for relevant information.

Where are Tropical Cyclone Information Bulletins Issued?

Tropical Cyclone Information Bulletins are issued by Regional Offices of the Bureau of Meteorology in Brisbane for Coral Sea cyclones and Perth for Indian Ocean Cyclones. Tropical cyclones in the Northern zone will be a threat to some land area within 48 hours; hence Darwin does not issue Tropical Cyclone Information Bulletins.
